Athens is the historic capital of Europe, home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites and the birthplace of democracy, arts, science and philosophy in western civilisation. Behind the shadow of the Parthenon, a deep connection to mathematics is embedded in the very streets that great thinkers, such as Pythagoras, graced. From the relics to the interactive museums to the markets, learning and exploring is as easy as π!
You’ll be able to: dive into the Greek culture with traditional food and dancing, explore the iconic ancient Greek buildings, and engaging museums on a range of topics!

Our Suggested Itinerary
-
Day 1
Flight from UK to Athens.
Hop straight into the Greek culture with a Greek Dance Workshop. Learn a variety of traditional dances from areas across Greece, dating back to 2000BC! Pythagoras said that music is mathematics, and what better way to experience it than to dance to it!
-
Day 2
Take a trip around Athens’ highlights with a guided tour around key sites: Ancient Agora of Athens, Acropolis of Athens and Temple of Olympian Zeus. While exploring these sites, you’ll find out some more about the golden ratio, the Fibonacci sequence, geometry, and pi in the Parthenon!
After you’ve explored the clever architecture by the ancient Greeks, explore their theories in action with the Museum of Illusions! Explore how physics, maths and art interact to trick our brains when looking at illusions. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at solving some tricky maths puzzles.
This afternoon, it is time to head to the Herakleidon Museum which looks at the science, art and technology of the ancient Greeks as well as a replication of the Antikythera Mechanism, an analogue computer constructed 2000 years ago!
After your busy day, it’s time for a taste of Greek cuisine at a local restaurant and free time in Monastiraki!
-
Day 3
This morning begins by reliving the games of your youth (or your parents’ youth!) at The Hellenic IT Museum. Here, you’ll experience how far technology has come from the times of the ancient Greeks through to today. With a special focus on computer science, you will see how maths is at the core of all technology!
You’ll then be able to dive deep into the vaults of National Bank of Greece Historical Archives. You’ll be able to see how economics impacts social history as well as how financial records reveal secrets about migration and communities.
Now it is time to head to Mount Lycabettus. According to myth, this hill was created by Athena, goddess of Mathematics, as she was carrying limestone to create the Acropolis but dropped it! From the top of the 277m hill, you’ll be rewarded by beautiful panoramic views of the city below.
Add a sprint finish to the end of your day at the Athens Olympic Museum. Find out more about the ancient and modern Olympics in the country that created them! The museum is also full of Olympic artifacts including medals won by Olympic and Paralympic legends!
-
Day 4
Head to the Acropolis Museum this morning to explore over 4,250 objects artifacts found from the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. Ranging from 3200BCE to 600AD, there are plenty of things to see here!
